Chapter One
After the pompous beta had accepted him into his pack, Benedict was bored as hell. Getting away from the fool as quickly as he had was not soon enough. And he thought he was going to bring down the Alpha? Hah! More likely the Alpha would rip his throat out, or perhaps sick the entire pack on the fool. Why anyone would work with this one dubbed Delgnat was far beyond him. Rump had placed itself in quite the deserted area; this pack did not seem incredibly lively. All he had seen thus far was the beta, and one other. A female if he could remember correctly, but she had scampered off as quickly as she came into vision. There had to be something he could do to rise in the ranks, gain the trust of them. But what? Humph, quite a predicament. To all who looked on, Benedict was truly not something incredibly lovely to look at. His coat was tinted blue while still mixing in with a black that promised death. A scar of cyan crossed his cheek in the strangest of patterns, one that any human of the time period new very well as death. The only think really interesting about him was a golden gaze that seemed to hold nothing, and everything at the same time.
As thoughts of boredom drifted through the Subordinate’s mind, the female who had crossed his vision early was busy watching the new comer. “What the hell is he doing?” Her voice was silent, hardly there to anyone who was not paying close attention. Seeing as Benedict was off in his own little world of blood lust and destruction, he of course was not on the look out for any danger. Sadistic laughter bubbled up from his throat, causing the ever-watching female to furrow an invisible brow. “Delgnat accepted that?” The word that was stressed, Uncouth was rather worried her beloved beta had gone insane. This time though, Benedict heard her words. Or at-least a muttering of some sort, “Who the hell are you?” Came his voice, completely different from the voice he had used with Delgnat only days ago. This voice was one of sarcastic air, much like The Joker in Batman and Robin. Female had blown her cover; silent curses were muttered as she escaped the shadows into the light. “I am Uncouth, head warrior of the Chicotah pack, the pack you happen to be stinking up with your horrible odor.”
To every male that ever lived, Uncouth was probably the most gorgeous thing on four paws. Her fur was the warmest of creams, dappled here and there with long crimson streaks. These streaks were not of her own blood, but merely markings that had been bestowed upon her frame at birth. Gaze held a glint that every animal, canine or not, could not help but throw himself at. It was the glint of sexuality, the glint that said ‘Go ahead and use me, I won’t mind.’ In the cocky way of her strut, this glint was enforced. But to all who actually took the bait, realized that they were sorely mistaken. Canines were stained crimson with the blood of not only game, but her own kind as well. Incredibly lucky that Benedict could care less about females, much less passing his genes on. No – his DNA was right where it should be, and there was no way in hell he was going to pass it on to some damned female! “Thanks for the heads up,” Came his reply dripping with sarcasm like venom, “But I happen to be a part of your beloved pack.”
“And what makes you think that you are? I don’t care if Delgnat accepted you, he only did it to re-enforce the army he’s trying to build. You’re nothing, slime.”
“Aw – what a cute pet name. Did you think of that yourself?”
Uncouth soared from her position to land squarely on the fool who could not watch his tongue, “Delgnat may have accepted you into this pack,” Came her hissed words, “But I can kill you just as easily.” Benedict’s lip lifted in a snarl, but it was in vain for the female atop him was clad down with muscle weight. “Do you hear me?” Words were muttered that no proper gentleman would ever say to a lady, “What was that?” She pressed, quite enjoying tormenting the new male. “I said, the only reason you got your position was by making –“ Before his sentence could be completed, Delgnat made his way onto the scene. The Beta was covered in scars from battle, crisscrossing this way and that on his muddy looking coat. “What’s going on here? Get off of him!” His lip was lifted in a snarl, tail was held high in dominance. These fools were going to listen to him, and listen to him good.
At once the cream female removed herself from Benedict, head held low in up-most respect for the official that the new comer to the pack was really starting to hate. “I was simply putting the new member in his place.” Came Uncouth’s voice, much different from what had recently entered the air. This voice was full of respect and admiration; anyone with ears could tell she lived for the Beta and nothing else. A simple huff was given from Benedict, as he lifted himself from the ground, dirt now covering his mug. The official sent a glare at the lowly subordinate before returning his gaze to prized female, “Good then. I was worried something was going on without my knowledge.” Never having learned his manners, Benedict spoke up without thinking, “If you can't trust your own Lead Warrior, this pack won’t last long.” The comment was cynical, and cut through Delgnat like a knife. How dare that bastard! Without a second word, he flung himself at Benedict landing squarely atop his stomach with canines bared. “I think you’re the one who won’t last long!” Subordinate simply allowed golden eyes to roll in their sockets, “Do you really want to kill one of the few who actually wants to help you take down Kein?”
Threatening growls that sounded more like roars came from the Beta’s throat, jaws snapped in front of Benedicts face before he removed himself. Padding next to Uncouth, rump was thrust to the ground like a child who has just been told he can’t have that new flavor of ice cream. “Consider yourself lucky.” At those words, a broad grin sprouted across Benedicts face like a Venus flytrap, “Oh I will,” After a second thought he added the word, “Sir.” Once again canines put themselves inches before the subordinates face, “Watch your mouth.” Uncouth, who had kept herself quiet, let laughter bubble up from inside her and escaped into the area in quite a strange manner. A single look for higher official shut her up, though flirtatious (as her grins always were) grin remained high on her lips. Delgnat made his way out of the area, rolling his eyes at how horrible this pack had become under Kein’s rule. What he ‘forgot’ to remember was Benedict had been accepted by he himself. Deciding to speak with the Beta personally, Uncouth followed like a lost puppy dog. But not without parting words to the new comer, “Watch yourself, slime.” Golden eyes rolled in their sockets, obviously ignoring what she had said. Limbs collapsed themselves as the pair made their way out of the area. What a day.
Chapter Two
As Benedict mulled over how to ruin the pack, the pair that had left mulled over what to do with him. Uncouth was more prone to the idea of killing him, while the official believed himself to be smarter than plain old murder. No – the Chicotah could use this fool to their advantage, granted he was stupid but he was smart as well. The fool knew exactly what to say at exactly the right times, a trait that Delgnat despised in him. They had traveled to an undisclosed area of the pack lands, known only to those who wished to bring down the Alpha that enjoyed to screw up the pack they had all worked so hard for. Said area was a grotto hidden beneath brush that had died many years ago, inside were rocks and carcasses of dead animals. The carcasses were thrown about carelessly, most of them only half eaten. The animals these skeletons came from had nothing in common, but the one thing that was similar in them all was the way they were killed. Not a quick bite to jugular like any other canine would do, no all of the animals had been brutally murdered in a slow and painful way. The rocks were set near the back of the cave, much like a stage. This is where Delgnat paced back and forth now, with Uncouth lain mere inches from where the stage began. The cavern itself reeked of death, the dead bodies of animals not helping it any. Little light peeked in; making the grotto ten times more horrible then it would have been in bright light.
“What are you going to do?” Seductive undertones danced across her voice, merely flaunting her personality around the Beta.
“If I knew that, I wouldn’t be pacing.”
“You don’t have to snap.”
“Obviously I do, if you can’t figure out obvious things for yourself.”
“It’s not my fault he can outsmart you.”
In that fraction of a second after the words escaped her mouth, Delgnat was on her. Leaping from the rocks he landed much like he had earlier on Benedict. “No one can outsmart me!” The fear he wanted (needed) to see in her eyes was there. The fear that he thrived on, it gave him the strength he needed to do his duties correctly. That was what Kein was doing wrong, he had no fear to fuel the fire that was dwindling in his soul. But Delgnat was different, he knew what he needed and got it as soon as he wanted it. “You hear me!” He shouted once more, awaiting the meek tone in her voice that often came when scolding was given. “Yes.” She replied softly, allowing the meekness he so hunted to shine through. If this was an act or not, only Uncouth herself knew. “Don’t forget, or next time I’ll have to damage that pretty little face of yours.” Removing his bulk from hers, he lept upon the stage and planted himself there, “And we don’t want that.” Smirk danced upon his face taking very much pleasure in her fear. “No, we don’t.” Came her response, voice having returned to its normal seductive ways. The official’s tail whipped this way and that in thought, what was he to do with this Benedict – or Uncouth for that matter. She knew her place, but slowly she was starting to step out of it more and more.
A shame too, over the years she had worked her way up into the position of his favored female. Oh well – easy come easy go. “Uncouth. What do you think we should do with Benedict?” Creamy ears perked at this question, just moments ago he had put her in her place and now he wished to know her opinion. The fears of Delgnat going insane were growing stranger as the hours past, “Kill him.” Came her response, causing the beta’s head to hang low. “That’s not an option m’dear, and I’m sure you know the reason why.” Indeed she did know why, but damsel couldn’t help but want to kill him. Quite doubtful that Delgnat did not want to kill him either, but as he had stated that was just not an option. Until the army against Kein grew, there was no way they could risk a warrior. “We shall exploit him then.” Belle’s voice was thoughtful, “Use his smart ass to our advantage. Kein will surly enjoy the way he speaks to you, which will put the fool in his favor. Benedict is a fool, but a smart fool. He must know that you are far stronger then the Alpha that runs this pack. At your command, he will drag Kein down and bring him to you. From there you can do what you like.” Sadistic grin had sprung up on both of their faces, enjoying this plan very much. “And that’s why I keep you around Uncouth. That’s why I keep you around.”
Delgnat beckoned the damsel to his side, a gesture she complied with immediately. Placing herself before him, tail waved this way and that slight scent came off of it but nothing that would make a male go crazy. Heat was not far off though; in a few days it would come, and you bet your nose that she was going to exploit it to the Beta for all she was worth! “And I’m glad you do.” The fear that had previously been instilled in her was gone now, replaced with sarcastic, flirtatious personality that one either loved or hated. “Now, down to business. Surly you’re tired of that flimsy position you call a rank. What rank would you like once I’m in charge my pet?”
“Whatever you want for me.”
“And what if I want Omega for you?”
“Then you’re a fool.”
Instead of toppling over her and snarling, laughter escaped his larynx, “You’d be right.”
Damsel collapsed at official’s paws in an exhausted manner, she was quickly joined by beta himself. There they lay, snout to snout, staring one another in the eye. As is often when staring at another, laughter bubbled up from both of their throats. It escaped into the air in a sadistic manner. Kein was going down, and he was going down hard.
Chapter Three!
As dawn broke out over the horizon Benedict found himself surrounded by those that had resided in the pack for long periods of time. “What do you think it is?” Once voice muttered, “A new recruit no doubt.” Came another, dragging the newest member of the Chicotah pack from his deep and comfortable sleep. Many blinks were given before he dragged himself up, glaring at each and every wolf that took a place in the circle around him. “Do you mind?” He voiced, golden gaze flashing in annoyance. “No not really, who the hell are you?” A black male stepped forward, green swirls danced across his coat that was brandished with scars of battle. His eyes were a sweltering crimson, promising death to any who crossed him. Unlike Delgnat, this male did not hold an intelligent gleam in his eye. Obviously one who acted on sheer impulse, perhaps this is why his coat (which would other-wise be gorgeous) was traced with crimson. The way his tail was held made it obvious he was of high rank, but what rank exactly would not be clear until his opened his mouth to speak. His name was Obtuse, but most simply referred to him as ‘dumb ass.’ Not to his face of course, but it was an often nickname when the wolf was not around.
“I’ll ask you again – who the hell are you?”
“I am the newest subordinate in your little family, so back off.”
“I suggest you watch your mouth.” Lip lifted in a snarl, Obtuse clearly one to press his rank on anyone.
“Feh, and what rank do you hold in this sorry little pack?”
“I’m the Delta Male of Chicotah, and if it’s sorry why in the name of hell did you join it?”
“Because I was bored.”
The Delta lept from his position to land squarely on top of Benedict, boy was he tired of getting sat upon. “I’m sure Delgnat already told you to watch your mouth, but I’ll tell you again. Don’t press us.” Benedict stared in the un-intelligent gaze that seemed to press into his very soul. “Sir yes sir.” Bulk shifted forward, pressing weight against his neck before he lifted himself off. “Oh, Uncouth would love you.” The official began to pad off when Benedict responded, “Indeed she does.” Skull snapped back, so it seemed this new recruit had already met the female that had captured Obtuse’s heart, “I’m surprised you’re not dead.” Caudal appendage flicked this way and that idly, wondering if Head Warrior had mentioned his name. “Aye – so am I.” Snort escaped the Delta’s nostrils, as both Delgnat and Uncouth arrived on the scene. At the mere site of Benedict, the hackles upon females neck raised in annoyance. The crowd that had gathered dispersed itself at once with the arrival of Beta, there was nothing interesting now that was worth the wrath of Delgnat. “Beta Delgnat. Uncouth.” Skull lowered in respect towards Delgnat, as well as Uncouth even though rank did not call for it. Beta noted this annoyingly, as he had already claimed Uncouth as his female. No – he did not love her, but she sure as hell wasn’t going to be with any other damned male. “Delta Obtuse.” Came lady’s reply, “Slime.” The response from ‘Slime’ was a wrinkle of the nose, but nothing else. He sure as hell didn’t want to be sat upon once again. “I was just putting the new recruit in his place.”
“Something he has yet to learn.”
“So I noticed.”
”Will you stop talking about me like I’m not here?”
“No.”
“Then I’m out of here.” Benedict stalked off in an annoyed manner, growing quite tired of this pack. It would be quite a pleasure when he brought it down to the ground.
The remaining three formed themselves into a circle; much like football players do before hiking the ball. “A lovely little attitude that one has.” Obtuse noted sarcastically, “Have you decided what to do with him?’ Both Beta and Lead Warrior nodded, but not a word was mentioned about the plans stated the previous night. Delta was not known to keep secret things secret for very long, but he was a good warrior and loyal to the pack which gave him his rank. Crimson gaze drifted from the beauty of Uncouth (She found his constant staring incredibly creepy, and was often prone to hide herself behind Delgnat) to that of the Beta. “Alright, but he’s annoying.”
“As we’ve noticed.” Uncouth replied cynically, obviously with distaste towards the Delta, “Now if you excuse me, I have business elsewhere. Beta Delgnat,” Respectful nod was given to him before she made her exit, brushing right past the blackened male. Invisible brow cocked itself in Obtuse, as questioning glance was given to the Beta. If canine anatomy allowed for a shrug surly one would be given, but a simple snort was given in its place. Quite a wonder that Delta had yet to figure out exactly why he had been given his high position, but that was why Delgnat had assigned it to him isn’t it? The dumber the rest of your pack is, the less chance Kein had at surviving. As soon as the current Alpha bit the dust, there would be a massive rank change in Chicotah. Those who had remained loyal bumped up, and those who opposed buried.
“Females are strange.” Obtuse spoke once more, oblivious to the fact that his obvious comments were quickly growing on Beta’s nerves. “Indeed.” He stated simply, with a lack of emotion that was often found in Benedict. Ears colored a dazzling jade perked at a far off sound Delgnat couldn’t care less about, “I must be off, probably another intruder.” Higher just rolled his eyes as the fool padded off into the distance, “Or maybe just another member you can’t remember.” A rush of air escaped his nostrils in a snort as he spoke to the air once more, “This pack is damn full of fools.” Little did he know Benedict had only headed downwind thus none were able to detect his presence. Smirk had grown across his features at this little grouping, a key meeting in the structure of the pack. Muttered words that none could hear no matter what level of hearing they seemed to have were given, “You sure got that right, Beta boy.”
Chapter Four
As it would happen, there was no other scent that would lure the Delta away – he simply hated speaking with Delgnat. Beta always seemed to have that ‘I’m better than you’ tone no matter what the occasion, and it drove Obtuse insane. Perhaps this is why when Benedict popped out from behind a bush, he was not as aggressive as he could have been. From what he had gathered, Delgnat hated this new recruit – something that brought immense joy to black and green shaded wolf. After all, the beta was the only thing standing between him and his love, to get him out of the way as quickly as possible was not quick enough. Rump hit the ground as the conversation began, “What do you want?” Obtuse stated in a bored tone, trying to match the tone that had irked him so much only moments ago.
“You’re horrible at that.”
“At what?”
“At pretending to be intelligent.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“You. You try to be smart, but you fail miserably. You either need to get some intelligence or acting lessons.” After a pause he added, “The later would probably be easier.”
“Shut up.”
“I’m only speaking the truth.”
“Maybe you should flatter me.’
”Flattery gets you nowhere. You don’t like Delgnat do you?”
“What makes you say that?”
Benedict snorted, “Anyone with eyes can see it. As I said – you need acting lessons.”
“You’re not what you seem.”
“No, I’m not buddy boy.”
“I have a name you ass.”
“Do I look like I care?”
“Not really low-life.”
“I thought it was Slime?”
“You thought wrong.”
“Touchy, touchy. Somebody has a crushey wushey.”
“Don’t make me sit on you again.”
A shiver crossed his spine, “Alright, alright. Calm down.”
“What about Delgnat?”
A blank look was all he received, much resembling the blank look he himself had given many a time.
“You said I didn’t like Delgnat, what brought him up?”
“Oh. I don’t know.”
“I’m the one who needs acting lessons?”
“You hate him, I hate him.”
“Big surprise there.”
“Shut it, I’m trying to make a deal here.”
“And what would that be?”
“To take down Delgnat.” A sadistic grin had spread itself across his muzzle, “He wants to take down Kein – no way in hell is he ever going to be thinking about a plot against himself.”
A rare (incredibly rare) thoughtful look had been placed on Obtuse’s facial area. Take down Delgnat? Benedict’s reasoning was incredibly accurate, he was far to busy building up his army to even think about a revolt against him. Kein was a lousy ruler, this was true, but the Beta would bring the pack to ashes. There was no chance in hell he could allow him to do that to his beloved who threw herself into the pack. Delgnat would do nothing for her but get her pregnant and perhaps kill her afterwards. Little did he know that Benedict planned to do perfectly that, wait until Uncouth got herself knocked up by the dumb ass before killing her on the spot. Then get rid of Delgnat, and probably Obtuse as well. He was stupid, newest member of the pack could clearly see why he had landed such a high position with the beta in charge.
“Alright, I’m with you. What do we do?”
The plan was simple enough; wait for Kein to arrive home (Obtuse had explained that he was off doing business with an allied pack at the moment) for that was surly when Delgnat was planning to launch his attack. The two would get to Kein before Delgnat could, and explain the situation quickly. When Delgnat’s army marched up to kill Kein, the duo would spring out and attack as best they could. Mostly aiming for Delgnat himself, perhaps a few of his pawns along the way. Benedict lacked to tell him that Uncouth would be pregnant and vulnerable during this time, a perfect time to kill her were she lay. This not only satisfied Benedict’s own blood thirst, but it made sure that none of Delgnat’s genes would be passed on. Subordinate had to go over the plan three times before it finally stuck in Obtuse’s mind (he went over it a forth just to make sure.) Atrocious thoughts drifted through both of their minds at the brawl to come, though they looked unbelievably different.
“Do you understand?”
“I understood it the third time you went over it.”
“Well, I have to make sure. This plan requires incredible timing.”
“I know, I know. Don’t lecture me damn it, I’ve been doing this longer than you have.”
“No. You haven’t.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“You like to use that word.”
“Benedict.”
“Fine. I’ve done this before … once. Only once, but it’s pretty damn easy. So – you going to make yourself Alpha?”
“It was your plan.”
“Nah, I’m not going to stick around after Delgnat and Kein are both dead.”
“Why not?”
“Because, I’ve killed off the stupid ones. No need to stay around.”
Invisible brow was cocked, Obtuse was incredibly confused – was he not the stupid one in the pack? “Whatever you say.”
“You keep that attitude, and everything will be A-okay.”
Crimson eyes rolled in their sockets, finding Benedict completely full of himself. And yet he managed to be the most cunning creature Obtuse had ever encountered in his life, go figure. “I should be going, if they smell you on me they’re not going to be happy.”
“Just tell them you were putting me in my place. I’ll go roll in a ditch or something and get all nice and bloodied for them.”
“You’re the weirdest canine I’ve ever met.
”And proud of it.”
