“GET UP, SHADOW,” the white wolf with dark green eyes nudged his sister with the back of his paw. Her eyes trembled, then opened a crack, and then finally snapped open in surprise. In no time at all she was on her feet and crouching to the ground to leap onto none other than her brother. She licked is face without a word as he tumbled to the ground and returned the affection.
“It’s only me,” he said, after he caught his breath. “What’s the sudden licking about?” The two were now standing and Shadow’s eyes were still wide with surprise but had a little hint of sadness in them as well. She hadn’t seen him in years. Perhaps he just lost track of the time they had been apart.
“Are you kidding?” She said finally. She took a few steps forward to bury her nose in his neck fur. “Halo, it’s been years! I’ve missed you so much.”
“I missed you too,” Halo licked the back of her neck then took a step back in a polite attempt to get her off of him. “Listen, the pack that I joined is really great and they would love to have you there. They need a new story-teller for the whelps since theirs recently had to pass on. You can do that and help out with the hunting as well since I know you are great at that. What do you say?”
Shadow pulled back. “I don’t know. I haven’t been with pups for a long time and I’ve been alone for the equivalent amount. I don’t know how to handle them anymore, let alone a pack.”
“Our old pack wasn’t well organized. Forget everything you’ve ever learned there and start fresh in the one that I joined. It’s called ‘The Aikou Pack’.”
“What about the pups?” Shadow asked.
“There are only two, Ivory and Note.” Halo answered. He sighed and smiled. “But that isn’t important. All that matters is that we are together again and that we can live in the Aikou pack together.”
“I’ll join then,” Shadow said, with a slight smile. “How far is it, Lo?”
“I’m not sure; it took me a few days since I was looking for you. But I think it would be at least a day or two of traveling until we get there. I hope that’s okay?”
“That’s fine. I can’t wait. It’ll be like old times,” she looked away, then realized that she was still in her cave. Finding Halo again seemed to make it disappear, and now it was back since she had calmed a little. “Remember when we were whelps?” She continued, looking back at him. “We always used to run away from the pack lands and get in trouble. Then they had to send out a bunch of wolves to search for us since we were the Alpha’s pups.” She laughed a little then walked passed her brother, taking her first steps outside into the morning for today. “Let’s go, now.”
